Her parents relocated to Puerto Rico for 15 months and then to London in order that her father could be able to attend at the London Film School. She grew up in north London's Crouch End neighborhood and attended Coleridge Primary School. She was 11 when the family relocated to the United States and they settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The family continued to live in an London apartment and spent their summers in London. Anderson received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1990 following her graduation from DePaul University, Chicago's Theatre School. She was part of the National Theatre of Great Britain summer camp on Cornell University. In order to help pay for school, she worked at the Goose Island Brewpub in Chicago.
